GSS Number: (required)

The number of the cave or karst feature as assigned by the GSS, leave empty if not known. You must enter either this or the Cave Name.

Cave Name: (required)

Official or most common name for the cave. This is not the place to add additional names to a cave of record. You must enter either this or the GSS Number.

Entrance Number: (required)

If there is more than once entrance, which one is being located

Northing: (required)

North Coordinate, that is Y, North or Latitude

Easting: (required)

East Coordinate, that is X, East, West, or Longitude

Coordinate Projection:

How is your GPS setup or what is the basis for your Topo Map . Lat/Long is the same as Geographic. CONUS means the Continental US.

Coordinate Datum (required):

Leave blank if not sure. There may be a choice on some GPS units, it can be extrapolated from projection otherwise. NAD27 CONUS is the North Americal Datum of 1927 for the Continental US. NAD83 is the North American Datum of 1983. WGS84 is the World Geographic System of 1984 from the CIA, HARN or HPGN is the High Precision Geodectic Network and the date can be 1984, 1986, 1988, 1989,1990-1994. write in anything you are using that is different.

Coordinate Units: (required)

What units are Northing and Easting expressed in?

Coordinate Reportded Error (EPE):

Estimated Positional Error (horizontal). If you can find an error reading what was it. This is a combination of X error and Y error, which you may see in NEMA phrases if you are using raw output from your GPS.

Elevation:

Elevation above mean Sea Level (US)

Elevation Units:

What units are the elevation in?

Elevation Datum:

Leave blank if not sure. NGVD29 is North American Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929. NAVD88 is the North American Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1988. Paper Quadrangles are almost always NGVD29. Leave blank if unknown, difference is a few feet.

Elevation Reported Error (EVE):

Estimated Vertical Error. Leave blank if not known. Definitely not the same as Error or EPE.

Position Sampling Method: (required)

How did the new location come to be? Be less specific if you are unsure of what kind of GPS reading you are using.

Sampling Device: (required)

While intuition is not a sampling device, Uncle Bob might be if he put a dot on a topo map while on the hill or directly afterwards. Otherwise GPS – Garmin, Eagle, Magellan Exporer,...

Sampling Person: (required)

Who went to the cave entrance.

Samplng Date: (required)

When were you (they) there. Just in case the entrance moved.

Person Turning In: (required)

Who are you. (email would be nice if you want electronic confirmation)

Submit Date: (required)

When are you turning in this form?

Comments:

Free form extra info such as a narrative of how to walk to the cave or oddities you saw on the way (Tom Moltz is not an oddity, even if you saw him on the way).

Feel free to attach snippets of topo maps or hand drawn info. (crayon maps not so welcome)
